Equality, diversity and inclusion

ASCL is committed to supporting and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) among school and college leaders, and in our own organisation. ASCL’s 2019-20 President, Rachael Warwick, chose this as the theme of her presidential year.

We plan to focus particularly this year on actions around the three protected characteristics of sex, race and sexual orientation. We hope, however, that this work will have a beneficial impact on the way in which we and our members also consider the needs and challenges of people with other protected characteristics.

In September 2019, we published our EDI Plan for 2019-2020. This plan was informed by many useful discussions with staff, grassroots organisations and school leaders experienced in, and passionate about, the issue of equality, diversity and inclusion, and we continue to engage with these and other groups to further develop our work and practice.

BAME leaders' network
As announced in our member newsletter of 15 September, ASCL is setting up a new BAME leaders' network, chaired by ASCL Council member and Headteacher Evelyn Forde. The first meeting will take place online on Monday 5 October from 7 - 8pm. Members who would like to take part should email CorporateAdmin@ascl.org.uk

Flexible Working Practice: ASCL is shining a light on school and college leaders who are working either part-time or flexibly in their leadership roles, and hope that by sharing these case studies, it will encourage more school leaders, governing bodies and trust boards to explore creative approaches to succession planning and recruitment into leadership roles.  Read the case studies here or follow the link in the box below.
