At the June 2026 session of
ASCL Council, we agreed a statement condemning the rising number of hate-related incidents on our streets, and reasserting the values of schools and colleges.
The statement is as follows:
"ASCL is sickened by the rising number of racist and other hate-related incidents and rhetoric in our society, and stands in solidarity with all our members and with all children, young people, and adults who are facing harassment, abuse, and physical attacks on our streets.
Education fosters understanding, critical thinking, acceptance, and respect for people of all faiths and backgrounds. Our schools and colleges are places where diversity is valued and celebrated, and where young people learn to reject prejudice. We are proud that our members model inclusive and ethical leadership, and call on leaders and those in positions of influence to do the same.
ASCL will always support members who are impacted by the spread of hatred and division, fight against discrimination in whatever form it takes, and champion the work of schools and colleges in helping to bring communities together.
If you are affected by these issues, please do let us know by writing to tellus@ascl.org.uk, and if you need our help and support, please contact our hotline."
