All categories of members are represented and the ratio of Council representatives to members is more generous in ASCL than in any of the other teachers’ professional associations. This democratic base is fundamental to serving our diverse membership and is essential to our continuing success and effectiveness.
Council meets three times during the academic year, in various locations during October, February (or March) and June. A Council meeting consists of plenary sessions, debates on ‘hot’ topics, and a forum session with a visiting speaker and attendance at a main committee and specialist committee. The main committees are:
- Conditions and Employment which includes pay and conditions of members, teacher and leader supply, recruitment, retention, workload, performance management policies, employer engagement, and pensions
- Curriculum and Assessment which covers curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, national tests and qualifications
- Ethics, Inclusion and Equalities which covers ethical leadership, closing the gap, equality and diversity, SEND, admissions and exclusions, access, human rights, behaviour, safety, and children with medical isues
- Funding which covers school and post-16 funding, funding related to SEND, funding related to disadvantage, capital
- Leadership and Governance which includes teacher and leader quality, standards, education and qualifications, governance (including system governance), inspection, and performance measures
