Recruitment and retention of teachers and school leaders is extremely challenging, as is that of the wider school workforce.  Pay and conditions of service are unattractive and uncompetitive, and the profession is not seen by many graduates as offering a compelling career structure.  It is increasingly less family friendly than other professions for maternity returners and offers little to encourage more experienced teachers to stay in the profession longer.
