Business Managers and Business Leaders Pay and Conditions of Service

Support staff in local authority-maintained schools have their pay and other terms and conditions determined through the National Joint Council (NJC) for local government services. The result of these negotiations is covered in The Green Book, and the national agreement on pay and conditions of service for local government services.

Many staff working in academies will also be subject to these provisions, either as a result of a TUPE transfer or because the trust they work in has chosen to adopt them as part of their terms and conditions of service. The Green Book was updated in April 2022.  The updated version now includes the pay scales and allowances for 2020 and 2021, the refreshed JE Scheme Guidance Notes at Part 4.1 (issued previously on 3 August 2020), and the updates to Part 4.12 (issued previously on 28 June 2021).  A tracked version showing the changes can be found here.

ASCL is committed to a system of national pay and conditions. Our guidance on Setting Pay for School Business Leaders and School Business Managers intends to bring more consistency and equality to the process of assessing the level of responsibilities to inform decisions about setting pay for business leaders and business managers.

The NJC Pay award for 2021 was agreed and confirmed on 28 February 2022.
