Make Work Pay: Improving access to flexible working

ASCL response to consultation Making Work Pay: Improving access to flexible working.

ASCL has a position statement on Flexible Working which states: "ASCL believes that all employers should take a proactive approach to flexible working opportunities for all staff. They should consider using the DfE support and guidance to seek to overcome any challenges that this may present. We encourage our members to embrace flexible working both for themselves and for their staff, and we will support them in making their own flexible working requests."

ASCL supports improving access to flexible working, but we highlight that our members have not seen meaningful improvements since the 2024 changes.

We emphasise the need for clearer, earlier and more workable processes that focus on overcoming barriers to employees’ requests, alongside better guidance and a positive narrative around flexible working.

Schools and colleges must also be properly resourced to implement any new requirements effectively.
