“While there are many positives in the UK’s results there is also food for thought. It is important now to digest the full findings of this study rather than rushing to judgement.
“PISA is only one measure of an education system and the work in our schools – in all the UK nations – goes far beyond these assessments.
“UK schools strive to teach a broad and enriching curriculum which prepares students for a wide range of courses and careers.
“The biggest challenge we face is how we can do better for young people with additional needs.
“While schools across the UK strive to provide the best support they possibly can, they are hampered by lack of sufficient funding and the specialist staff they need.
“These are the areas on which governments must focus. This will not only improve PISA results but more importantly the life chances of these young people.”
