Pepe Di’Iasio, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, responds to the publication of The Children's Plan: The Children's Commissioner's School Census.

This report echoes the concerns of school and college leaders that the lack of investment in education and wider services for children is making it difficult to meet the increasingly complex needs of many pupils.

“As public services have crumbled, schools have been left with no choice but to attempt to fill this void by providing services that go way beyond education. As well as placing a huge burden on staff, this has also muddied the waters as to where the responsibilities of schools and other agencies start and end.

“The Children’s Commissioner’s point that the challenges many children face cannot be solved alone is an important one. It is time to clearly map out who is responsible for delivering the wide range of responsibilities across education and social care, ensuring all bodies are resourced appropriately in order to meet these expectations and deliver the best possible support to children and young people
