ASCL NI welcomes publication of Framework for General Qualifications

03/03/2026
ASCL Northern Ireland has welcomed the publication by the Department of Education of its new Policy Framework for General Qualifications offered by CCEA.

The Policy Framework confirms that all GCSEs will be linear in structure with the exception of English Language, mathematics and science, and content within them will be reduced. At A-level, AS will be removed as a standalone qualification. Schools will however continue to have the option of completing one assessment, worth 30% of A-level, at the end of Year 13.

At both GCSE and A level, subject content will be reduced, and coursework and controlled assessment will only be offered in subjects where the practical skills cannot be assessed via written examination.

Commenting on the new Policy Framework, Michael McAuley, Director of ASCL Northern Ireland, said: “ASCL Northern Ireland welcomes today’s announcement that will now give schools clarity on decisions around future GCSE and GCE qualifications. ASCL Northern Ireland supports the move to reduce content across all qualifications which will allow more time for students to develop the requisite knowledge and skills. It is also positive that modularity will be retained for GCSE English Language, GCSE mathematics and GCSE science. While there has also been a commitment to reduce the amount of coursework and controlled assessment, ASCL welcomes the acknowledgement this form of assessment continues to prove an important mechanism for measuring skills that can’t be assessed through a written examination.

“ASCL Northern Ireland will now work with both the Department of Education and CCEA to manage the transition to new arrangements in the interests of our schools here
