ASCL NI comment on outcome of Independent Review of Assessment

06/03/2026
On Thursday 5 March the Department of Education published the outcome of the Independent Review of Assessment, a key pillar of the department’s TransformEd Strategy.

Covering children’s education from 4-14, the panel’s recommendations include: the introduction of a new statutory assessment pathway; the development of a writing repository; a record of development and education for each pupil; and the establishment of an Education Reporting Unit to manage and analyse assessment data.

Commenting on the report’s publication, Michael McAuley, Director of ASCL Northern Ireland said: “ASCL welcomes the recommendations in the report which are both significant and far-reaching. The new assessment arrangements will provide teachers with clear and consistent information that will allow them to effectively assess pupils and provide invaluable data at key transition points. They will also allow schools to provide easily understood feedback to parents. Members are reassured by the assertion that decisions taken were informed by a commitment to reduce bureaucracy, workload and duplication for teachers.

“We want to thank the panel for their work, and we look forward to working in partnership with all stakeholders to take forward the recommendations in the interests of our young people
.”
