ASCL Cymru comment on free school meals

Claire Armitstead, Director of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) Cymru, comments on the announcement of a funding boost for free school meals in Welsh primary schools.

“Free school meals are a lifeline for many families in Wales, and we are glad to see this additional funding made available. This will help primary schools continue to provide free school meals for all pupils.

“There is much more that needs to be done to address the barriers created by child poverty and ensure all children are in a position to learn when they come to school.

“As an immediate step, we would like to see the Welsh government extend free school meal eligibility to all secondary school pupils whose families are in receipt of Universal Credit.

“This entitlement is currently restricted to households with an income of less than £7,400 which means that many secondary-aged children in poverty miss out.

“Extending eligibility to all households in receipt of Universal Credit would reflect changes which are planned in England and mean we don’t end up with disadvantaged children in Wales being treated less generously than pupils across the border
