Putting people at the heart of strategy

How can leaders respond to the workforce challenge by creating inclusive, flexible and sustainable people strategies with talent pathways for all staff?

Recruitment shortfalls, high early-career turnover, workload pressures and a fast-changing legislative landscape mean that how we lead people has never mattered more. This conference combines expert insight and honest exploration of the challenges with the practical tools, case studies, and clear next steps you need to build a people strategy that works in your setting.

At this conference you will:
  • Understand how to use flexible working as a strategic tool for retention, wellbeing and workforce sustainability, not just an operational obligation.
  • Build or strengthen a people strategy that aligns with your organisational mission and supports staff throughout the employee lifecycle.
  • Hear case studies from education and beyond on inclusive talent pathways, culture change, and what actually improves retention.
  • Get the latest pay and conditions update, including what the Employment Rights Act and wider legislative reform means for your school, college or trust.

Additional learning
Your place includes more than a one-day conference. The ASCL People and Culture Conference is designed to support iterative, sustained professional development so your learning doesn’t stop when you leave the room.

Creating the right culture through inclusive and ethical leadership
Jagdeep Pabla, National Education Diversity Awards
What happens when we stop asking our colleagues to simply survive the profession and instead support them to build cultures when people genuinely thrive? Drawing on powerful examples emerging through the National Education Diversity Awards, this workshop explores the leadership decisions, policies and cultural shifts already helping schools and trusts strengthen retention, wellbeing, inclusion and long-term workforce sustainability.

Developing a meaningful people strategy
Amy Whittall, Executive Director for Trust Development, The Mercian Trust
This session will explore provocations about what a people strategy is, and importantly isn't, and the ways in which organisational culture and intentional planning are key to building a strategy which can endure. We will look together at some of the core questions to ask when developing a strategy, which assumptions it may be important to consider (both those which might be known and unknown) and the importance of risk appetite when developing your strategy.  The session will share examples which highlight the role of culture, intentionality and innovation in delivering your strategy.
