There is much to admire about the English education system.

Our schools and colleges are led by passionate and committed people. Our teachers work tirelessly to give children and young people the best possible start in life. Our performance in the various international comparative studies which have gained so much prominence in recent years is increasingly strong. 86% of schools are judged to be good or outstanding by Ofsted.

But the benefits of this high-quality education are not felt equally by all children and young people in our society. The recent Education in England report from the Education Policy Institute and the Fair Education Alliance estimated that, at the current rate of progress, it will take more than 500 years to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their non-disadvantaged peers at the end of secondary school.

We think that one of the richest countries in the world, in the 21st century, can do better than that. Our Blueprint for a Fairer Education System will explore ways in which we might narrow the gap more quickly, and improve the life chances of all children and young people.

We plan to publish the Blueprint in spring 2021. In March 2020, we launched a call for evidence, inviting all those interested in supporting us in this work to share their thoughts on this crucial issue.

The call for evidence closed on 10 April 2020.
