The role of business leader can determine the financial stability and success of the institution, and has long-term and far-reaching influence. The recruitment and selection process, therefore, requires headteachers and principals to prepare and plan carefully if they are to appoint the best person to this key role.

ASCL Professional Development has developed a comprehensive and cost-effective Leadership Appointment Service (LAS) for Business Leaders, offering expert guidance and advice to headteachers and principals, and governing bodies and trust boards.

All our expert consultants are either serving or former business leaders, with active experience of the changing role of business leader. They understand the scope of the role’s requirements, providing an unparalleled level of support, expertise and experience during the appointment process.

About the service

A dedicated consultant will guide you through the recruitment process from start to finish and will:

  • scope the role, taking into account the future needs and requirements of the organisation

  • advise on advertising and the application pack to generate the best possible field

  • help tailor the job description and person specification to meet the specific needs of the organisation

  • ensure realistic timescales for the recruitment process are set and followed

  • produce all relevant paperwork to support the selection process, ensuring this is fully compliant with recruitment and equalities legislation and recommended best practice

  • provide professional experience to judge a candidate’s relative strengths, and advise on their suitability for your leadership post

ASCL’s LAS for Business Leaders features three tiers of support: bronze, silver and gold. All tiers include scoping of the organisation's needs and completion of the person specification, job description, candidate brief documentation and applicant pack contents.

Candidate assessment (including guidance on the design of rigorous candidate selection assessments), full support throughout the interview process, and attendance on interview days is also included within all three tiers of support.

Optional assistance includes drafting the advert, review of applications and shortlisting advice, including screening by telephone prior to interview.

An initial presentation to the governing body can be arranged if required, and at no cost or obligation.
