Principles of Timetable Construction (Residential)

08:30 - 16:00, 15 - 16 June 2018 Bristol Book now

This two-day course, combining and extending days one and two of the Principles of Timetable Construction course, is primarily designed for staff new to timetabling or with limited experience.

Day one will focus on the basic principles underpinning planning and preparation. There will be a variety of practical activities to illustrate the impact of constraints and to introduce a range of tools and strategies, including feasibility tests and staff deployment analysis, essential for the successful completion of a timetable.

The residential format enables a more in-depth look at the processes introduced in Day one. It also provides an opportunity to discuss timetables with other participants and the presenters. With detailed planning of the school timetable beginning in September for the following academic year this is a good time to experience the two day course. View the timeline

On day two participants will explore each step of scheduling an imaginary school using paper resources. Practical activities will enable participants to appreciate issues encountered during scheduling and to explore solutions. References will be made to functions and tools in timetabling software, however, the emphasis is on exploring an effective sequence of scheduling activities.

Participants will:

  • be introduced to a systematic approach to the planning and scheduling of a secondary school timetable

  • explore the basic principles of timetabling through presentation, discussion and practical exercises in excel and on paper

  • learn to use a range of tools and techniques to plan and schedule a timetable and understand the role of software in completing the task effectively

  • place the process of timetabling within the context of the school curriculum and financial planning

  • develop the skills to interpret and analyse their own timetable, lead discussion and begin the timetabling process themselves
