How to be an Outstanding Head of Maths

08:30 - 16:00, 12 March 2019 Birmingham

This course is aimed at those who have (or aspire to) positions of responsibility for mathematics in school. It will explore what it means to be in such a leadership role and provide practical strategies for participants to use when they return to school. The day will be structured around three key issues: the role of a leader with students; the subject of mathematics; leading other staff. There will be a range of resources (paper and electronic) for participants to take back to school to support their work.

The course includes discussion of pedagogy when teaching KS3 and KS4 mathematics in particular, though all other aspects of the day are relevant to those leading a mathematics team in any key stage.

Participants will:

  • develop skills and knowledge relevant for a leadership role with staff and students

  • know how to track staff and student progress in a subject area with significant whole school pressure to ‘perform’

  • consider all aspects of leadership in a generic context and in the context of mathematics teaching

  • be able to share current resources and thinking about the teaching of mathematics
