Leading On - Bereavement (Part 1) - Leading Your Community Response

This introductory session will explore the issues that school and college leaders will need to consider in relation to bereavement, with a particular focus on the impact of the coronavirus situation.

This session is the first webinar in a three-part series.

However well prepared we are to handle individual bereavements in our schools andcolleges, the current circumstances are beyond the normal range of experience for most leaders and have highlighted the crucial role education settings play in providing security and support.

Given the Covid-19 pandemic, it is likely that many schools and colleges will have families who have lost loved ones: loss of pupils, parents, staff, family members, or friends. The lockdown, both at national and local level, means that grief may be delayed or complex. Communications, whether face-to-face or virtual, will need to reflect the ongoing impact of this generational impact for some time.

Over 90% of schools do not have any specialist training in bereavement, yet one in thirty pupils will be recently bereaved.

This session will equip participants with a core knowledge of bereavement and the particular challenges that the Covid-19 context may cause. It will enable participants to plan ahead to achieve a consistent and compassionate approach to bereavement which helps them lead their whole community response in the initial phases of support.
