School support staff pay award - letter to Education Secretary

24 April 2018

ASCL is extremely concerned that schools are being left to pick up the tab for the recently agreed pay award covering school support staff without any additional funding from the government to meet this significant cost. We support the principle of giving support staff a decent pay rise, but it should be funded by the government. It is the latest in a series of unfunded additional costs which have driven school finances to breaking point. As school budgets are already under severe strain, this means that schools will have to make cuts elsewhere and that is likely to result in further reductions to their curriculum, student support services and enrichment activities.

ASCL General Secretary Geoff Barton wrote to the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds, on 24 April 2018 to express our concerns, and the letter can be read in full here.
