School nursing

27 September 2016

The National Children’s Bureau (NCB) has published a report, based on a survey, on Nursing in schools: how school nurses support pupils with long-term health conditions.

In the survey, 90% of school nurses said high workloads and limited time and resources challenged their ability to support children with long-term health needs. Nearly four-in-ten of the school nurses surveyed work across ten or more schools, and these nurses are significantly less confident in providing help to pupils with serious health conditions.

To ensure school nurses can support children with long-term conditions alongside their other responsibilities and activities, NCB is calling for a number of actions to be taken including:

  • further recruitment and training of school nurses

  • maintaining sufficient levels of funding

  • providing more information on the role of school nurses and how to access their services

  • further CPD for school nurses
