Promoting social mobility

01 December 2014

There is broad consensus that social mobility is a major issue for the UK, in terms of ensuring long-term economic prosperity and creating a more just and equal society. There is no doubt that schools and colleges have a major role to play in narrowing the achievement gap and that it is incumbent on their leaders to drive forward this agenda.

We recognise that in Britain's highly stratified society, raising achievement of young people in disadvantaged areas is an enormous challenge and there are no easy answers. This doesn’t mean it can’t be done, however, and we know that ASCL members are wholly committed to playing their part.
