DfE guidance on dealing with sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges

18 December 2017

The DfE's report Sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges was published 14 December 2017.

The advice reflects best practice, and can be used by all schools and colleges in dealing with issues which can be complex and difficult to navigate. The guidance will assist schools and colleges to deal with allegations of sexual assault between children and young people, as well as create a whole school approach to safeguarding and child protection.

The DfE consulted with ASCL members when writing their advice to ensure that it is as helpful and practical as possible and covers:

  • what sexual violence and harassment is

  • schools’ and colleges’ legal responsibilities

  • a whole school or college approach to safeguarding and child protection

  • how to respond to reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment

Publication of this guidance follows the disturbing evidence reported to the Women and Equalities Committee in 2016 which highlighted the scale and impact of sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges. Their report, published in September 2016, can be read here
