Breakout Session One
So, what is the true cost of education and what is ASCL doing about it?
Julia Harnden, ASCL Funding Specialist and Sam Ellis, ASCL Funding Consultant
As the government comprehensive spending review approaches, all minds in the education sector turn to thinking about what we can do to get Her Majesty’s Treasury to deliver a settlement that matches what we need to deliver great education.
ASCL has built its funding campaign on first thinking about what education looks like in the 21st Century and what society expects from us and secondly, on what it will cost to deliver it.
In this workshop we will discuss ASCL’s report on The True Cost of Education (released March 2019), and consider what the next steps need to be. We will take a close look at the entitlement model that forms the basis of our report and look at how it can be used to build a 10-year plan for education.

Good Estate Management for Schools
Rachael Davies, Head of Capital Efficiency and Capability, DfE
A school building is part of the hidden ethos of a school, and can be instrumental in shaping its operation.
As leaders you have to make sure the estate serves your present and future goals, meets statutory requirements, is resourced strategically and provides a safe and supportive environment.
This interactive workshop will cover the questions your leadership team should be asking to ensure it’s managing the estate well. There will be a chance to hear about DfE’s Good Estate Management for Schools resource, along with findings from research with schools and trusts about the challenges they face and their priorities. There will be an opportunity to share practical advice and strategies with other leaders, and feedback to the department about how we can further improve our resources in response to feedback.
