Barbara Stanley was a headteacher for nineteen years in two British and one Irish independent girls’ schools, preceded by a deputy headship. All these schools included primary departments as well as secondary, thereby providing a range of experience from Early Years Foundation Stage to sixth form. Internationalism was a recent theme, both through introduction of the International Baccalaureate diploma programme at The Abbey School, Reading, and a headship in Dublin which provided an interesting perspective on an education system outside the UK. Before that, she taught in both single sex and co-ed schools, in the maintained and independent sectors, and held both academic and pastoral middle leadership posts.
Barbara became an independent school representative on ASCL Council (2011-14) and was immediately impressed by its dynamism, professionalism and effectiveness. Her aim now is to build ever stronger and productive links between the independent sector and ASCL, to support members and to ensure that we all work together to further the best interests of our young people.
