Commenting on the wider opening of secondary schools and colleges to more pupils from today, Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said:

“The feedback we have received indicates the wider opening of secondary schools and colleges to pupils in Year 10 and Year 12 from today has got off to a smooth start. Students are overjoyed to be back, and staff are relieved to be returning to classrooms to do the job they love.

“The anecdotal reports that we have received indicate that attendance among the eligible groups of pupils is at a high level. Some pupils and parents are too anxious to attend but we think that confidence will grow over time.

“Schools and colleges have done a fantastic job in implementing the safety measures and logistics necessary to welcome back these young people. This is another important step forward in restarting the education system and getting back to a semblance of normality.”
