Commenting on the Week 19 school attendance figures
, Geoff Barton, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said:
“We are very pleased to see that school attendance is continuing to hold up so well. This latest set of statistics shows a small drop in attendance last week but we note that Covid-related pupil absence has remained steady.
“The next big test will obviously be the easing of restrictions under step 3 of the roadmap out of lockdown which begins next week and includes the controversial decision to remove the requirement for pupils to wear face masks in secondary school and college classrooms.
“There are clearly concerns also over the emergence of variant strains of the Covid virus.
“All of this reminds us that there is still some way to go but we would reassure people that schools and colleges have in place very robust and effective control measures to reduce the risk of transmission. They have done an extremely good job in navigating through these difficult circumstances.”
