Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): Voluntary national pilot

April 2019

The MTC is a new assessment, and the first national curriculum assessment in England, to be delivered on a digital platform. The Standards & Testing Agency (STA) is giving schools the opportunity to try out the new assessment with Year 4 pupils this summer in a voluntary national pilot, which will run from 10 to 28 June, before it becomes statutory in 2020. Ahead of the pilot, the school administration area and pupil ‘try it out’ application are now open. This will allow schools to register their pupils for the check and give pupils an opportunity to try it so that they become familiar with the format.

To accompany the familiarisation service going live, the STA has published the MTC administration guidance as well as an information video. If you have any questions about the MTC, please see the MTC information page or additionally, you can contact the helpline on 0300 303 3013 or email
