Responding to the confirmation by the Secretary of State that the requirement for schools to give 24 hours notice about detentions is removed from today, Brian Lightman ASCL General Secretary said:
“ASCL has welcomed moves by the Secretary of State to back schools in maintaining high standards of behaviour. The rigid requirement to give 24 hours notice of detentions has sometimes been used by a small number of students and unsupportive parents to try to avoid these sanctions. Removing the requirement sends a clear and welcome message that it is the absolute right of schools to detain children who do not behave properly.
“In reality, schools are very aware of ensuring pupils are able to get home safely so it is highly probable that this announcement will make no difference to the standard practice of informing parents when a child is going to be detained, but it may happen at shorter notice. The message to pupils is clear: Follow school rules, behave well and you will avoid detentions. Most importantly you will be helping yourself to do your very best at school.
