ASCL reaction to Michael Gove speech on pension reform

While Michael Gove’s comments on ‘militant union leaders’ was ill-advised and reckless, the overall message in his speech on industrial relations today was balanced and outlined candidly the government’s side on pensions, said ASCL president Joan McVittie, who was in the audience at the Policy Exchange event.

Joan McVittie said:

“Michael Gove set out the current situation on pensions and what is currently on the table. The tone of the speech was conciliatory and I welcomed the fact that he did not want heads or teachers criticised for their action if schools were closed. I particularly welcomed his recognition of the key role school leaders and teachers have to play in the myriad of reforms and the importance of reaching a settlement which is acceptable to all parties to this end.”

“However at the same time we all recognise that much remains to be negotiated around. We are potentially facing a significant change to conditions of service and his commitment to a prompt return to negotiations following the strike is of crucial importance.”
